What will this mean? NFS Mediation have continued to be great supporters of the Restorative Justice Consortium and active implementers of the restorative justice code in their work and welcome the latest news from the Government. In July last year, the coalition government have committed to a timetable of events to reform the sentencing and penalties of the justice system. Currently conducting a full examination of sentencing policy to ensure that it helps to cut crime, protect the public, punishes offenders and reduces re-offending, this will encompass a number of items. One of those items is the developing of reform options for the sentencing framework and will cover a full range of penalties and restorative measures in adult and youth sentencing. Christopher Blunt, Justice Minister said, "We have a historic opportunity to look at how restorative justice can be introduced into the criminal justice system. I met with representatives from the Restorative Justice Consortium, and I have asked them to work with my officials, to put forward proposals on how restorative justice measures could be used across every phase of the criminal justice process: from pre-trial right through to interventions in prisons to prepare offenders for release." President of NFS Mediation Nick McGeorge who helped set up the Restorative Justice Consortium and is both a mediator for neighbour disputes and criminal court cases says " Seen by many as a cost cutting exercise by the government, this is in fact a radical reform which will give victims the opportunity to tell offenders the real impact of their crime and what is needed to repair that harm. Restorative Justice holds offenders to account for what they have done, personally and directly, and helps victims to get on with their lives. We at NFS Mediation have been successful for many years in this line of work. During the Governments consultation process, NFS Mediation will submit evidence and continue to support the work of the Restorative Justice Consortium and its Best Practice codes."
